About Magdrive
Magdrive is developing the next generation of spacecraft propulsion. Our cutting-edge thruster technology promises to deliver unmatched thrust and efficiency, enabling accessibility to new orbits and entirely new industries such as satellite servicing, orbital assembly, and interplanetary transport . We are also starting to develop recycling & refuelling approaches for future spacecraft propulsion.
About the role
As an Electronics Engineer at Magdrive, you will design, develop and test the electronic systems used in our spacecraft propulsion systems and ground-based test equipment.
The role will focus particularly on power electronics, including DC-DC converters, battery systems and energy-storage systems using technologies such as supercapacitors. You will take designs from initial requirements and analysis through schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, testing and system integration.
This is a practical, hands-on role involving the development and testing of complex electronic hardware. You will collaborate across the firmware, mechanical, systems and physics teams to develop robust electronics for both experimental and space flight applications.
What you'll be doing
  • Design and develop electronic systems for Magdrive thrusters and supporting test equipment, with a particular focus on power conversion and energy storage.
  • Take ownership of hardware throughout its development lifecycle, including designing, prototyping, manufacturing support, bring-up, verification and system integration.
  • Translate system requirements into electrical architectures, circuit designs and testable hardware.
  • Build, commission and test prototype and production hardware using appropriate laboratory equipment and safe working practices.
  • Design analogue, digital and power-electronic circuits, including DC-DC converters, power distribution, protection, monitoring and control circuitry.
  • Develop simple software or scripts, where required, to support hardware bring-up, automate testing and collect data.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical systems and conduct structured failure investigations and root-cause analysis.
  • Collaborate across the firmware, mechanical, systems and physics teams to define interfaces and integrate electronics into thruster and test systems.
  • Support PCB fabrication, assembly and component suppliers through manufacturing reviews, technical queries and resolution of production issues.
  • Contribute to design reviews and identify technical risks, design weaknesses and opportunities for improvement.
  • Produce clear design documentation, calculations, test procedures, test reports and manufacturing information.
What we're looking for
Essential
  • A degree in electronic engineering, electrical engineering or a related discipline, together with at least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • A strong understanding of power conversion fundamentals, including switching converters, power semiconductor selection, feedback and control, efficiency, thermal performance and protection.
  • Practical experience designing or developing DC-DC converters, switched-mode power supplies or comparable power conversion systems
  • Demonstrated ability to take electronic hardware through schematic capture, PCB layout, manufacture, bring-up and testing.
  • Proficiency with a professional PCB design tool such as Altium Designer, KiCad or an equivalent package.
  • Practical experience building, modifying, testing and repairing electronic hardware, including SMT soldering and rework.
  • Confident use of laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, differential and current probes, electronic loads and power supplies.
  • The ability to analyse and troubleshoot complex hardware problems using a structured, evidence-based approach.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Desirable
  • Experience developing energy-storage systems, including supercapacitor- or battery-based systems and their associated charging, monitoring, balancing and protection circuitry.
  • Practical knowledge of high voltage system design and testing, particularly in the range of 1 kV to 5 kV.
  • Knowledge of pulsed power systems, high current switching or capacitor discharge circuits.
  • Experience using circuit simulation tools such as LTspice or an equivalent package.
  • Ability to write embedded software in C or C++ for hardware bring-up, control or testing.
  • Experience in developing electronics for spacecraft, aerospace or another high reliability industry.
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification testing, including thermal vacuum, vibration, shock or EMC testing.
