Backend Software Engineer (Flight Dynamics) Intern

Working for Open Cosmos

Aim high, go beyond! At Open Cosmos we are solving the world’s biggest challenges from space, providing businesses, governments and researchers access to more readily available information than ever before - ready for the challenge? Then read on…

Ground Segment Products Team

Our team develops, operates, and maintains ground segment software critical for satellite operations. Our cloud-native Mission Operations Centre (MOC), is built with modern technologies like microservices, Kubernetes, Go, RabbitMQ, Postgres and Terraform. You'll be writing and shipping code from day one and have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the product, from functionality to quality and maintainability.

We follow an agile methodology in the team and encourage a DevOps mindset where engineers own their work from conception to testing and deployment. As a team we look for suggestions & contributions from all team members, and we’re not afraid to try new ways of working when we see an opportunity for improvement.

What will you be doing?

As a backend software engineer you’ll be responsible for delivering new software, through design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance, in addition to looking after existing services. You’ll follow best practices for developing maintainable software and push for all the team to do the same.

This role also has a focus on flight dynamics developments, meaning you will be working on the development of mission design, planning and analysis tools for both our existing fleet of satellites, and for the inception of future missions. Satellite tasking, orbit determination, constellation design, manoeuvre planning and collision avoidance are just some of the capabilities that you could be working on.

In this role you will coordinate within the team and key stakeholders such as the satellite operators (the users of our platform) to contribute to the technical roadmap, design the architecture, develop the software and ship it. You will work closely with other engineers in the Ground Segment and adjacent teams to deliver a fully autonomous satellite operations platform. As the company and software is growing rapidly you will be challenged to deliver new features that impact the business and provide value to customers.

What you need to be successful

  • A strong mathematical background, and a degree in a relevant subject area, (i.e. Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science).

  • To be familiar with spacecraft systems, orbital mechanics and the space environment.

  • To be confident with developing software to solve flight dynamics problems. Experience with Java, Python or Go is a plus!

  • A proactive attitude, always looking to improve their skills and not afraid to suggest ideas on ways to enhance our workflows and processes.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, listening effectively, getting to the core of messages and responding appropriately.

To apply, you must have the legal right to work in your chosen location.

Why Open Cosmos?

  • Work at the cutting edge of space technology with customers around the globe.

  • A mission-driven company making space accessible to help solve real-world challenges.

  • A diverse, ambitious, and supportive team
